Police arrest dozens at Palestine Action protest
The Met Police has again arrested dozens of mostly older protesters for protesting against Israel’s genocide and the UK’s ‘terror’ ban on protest group Palestine Action.

Yup Military Keynesianism is going to be at the centre of Andy Burnham's defence policy, and he rocking up in Barrow-in-Furness to make that clear....
Its yet one more continuity with the previous Govt. which was also very keen to claim investment in defence had a major positive impact on the UK's economy (through employment & local procurement), but which failed to convince on contact with the reality of imported arms & military technology.

Judging by what I read in the comments, few peeps here know anything about building, operating and maintaining SSN and SSNB. Moreover, they have no idea of the interconnectedness between the #US and #UK (And now Australia — #AUKUS) in terms of engineering, design and distributed component manufacture which are imbedded into these submarine systems. Whatever else one might opine about the AUKUS deal, Australia is currently investing in both the US and UK submarine building capacity as well as on home ground near Adelaide — thousands of long term jobs and increased industrial capacity in all three nation states. In the US some 76 billions USD have just been awarded to US submarine builders. The UK is merely mirroring a similar commitment, just as Australia is beginning to do.
Sure, rage against defence spending using misinformed opinions if you must. I just think that given the current break down of international agreements, and aggressive heads of State, it’s a more dangerous world out there. Our anger is better directed at matters which we can fix domestically… health, cost-of-living, tax reforms, regulated financial markets, limits to individual wealth, wealth redistribution, strengthening democratic institutions, law reforms, govt accountability, institutional transparency…. And the list goes on. Unless we’ve made the effort to get into the weeds of Defence matters, we ought to keep the discussion at a very, very high level IMO.
For once the fact the the bulk of FTSE 100 shares are outside the golden circle of AI-related technologies has been a positive rather than a negative (in financial services commentary terms), as the index hits a historic high, being the bolthole for (English language) investors seeking a safe haven from US AI-exposed stocks....
So being a (partial) back water (in share market terms) has finally paid off....

If you've been wondering about Miatta Fahnbulleh, who has taken over from Ed Miliband as the Dept. of Energy Security & Net Zero, here is a profile from the Guardian stressing her 'radical' economic background, her work with the New Economics Foundation & her unwillingness to bend on things that matter (to her).
In the end, might this be Andy Burnham's most consequential appointment?
Its good to see Ed Miliband taking up the UK's World Bank seat himself (rather than leave it to a junior minister).
But as well as focussing on development & the climate, he will need to make the argument that the UK's international profile not only needs repairing, but a better global reputation may well help deliver Andy Burnham's domestic agenda;
its not an impossible argument to make, but will be harder in face of a myopic & parochial media!

@peterbrown @ChrisMayLA6 I was really struck by a documentary I listened to a few years ago about Finland’s (extremely successful) education system
Students & teachers co-design the curriculum, not around discreet subject areas but around areas the students want to explore & understand or problems they’re interested in solving and the teachers pull in the different disciplines & specialisms to enable it
150 years since Dickens & Gradgrind still runs #uk #education
Before Trump's close pal Jeffrey Epstein’s notorious criminal actions were exposed, Annie Farmer attempted to alert authorities in 1996 about Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell’s involvement in crimes against young girls. Her warnings were tragically dismissed, allowing #Epstein to continue his illicit activities unchallenged, creating a network that evolved into a significant international sex trafficking operation. Decades later, Farmer sued the federal government for their inaction despite having received her complaint. This case highlights a systemic failure to protect vulnerable victims, as the warning signs were evident yet overlooked, while the #EpsteinClass rapist and funders have not been investigated.

@ChrisMayLA6 he should be telling them to study the things that inspire them.
That is the route to high performance.
