I went out to water my plants and noticed that what had been a nice leafy cory's pipevine plant was now looking rather ragged. At first, I was upset. Then I noticed the reason the plant was looking ragged --pipevine swallowtail larvae.

I knew pipevine was a host plant for these pretty #butterflies, but I'd never seen any larvae on it. Well, now there are a lot of larvae. Hopefully, that will lead to a lot of butterflies.

How many larvae do you see?

I got some video of this fat guy chowing down on a pipevine leaf.

With the number of caterpillars on the plant, no wonder it went from bushy to ragged almost overnight.

That relationship wasn’t meant to last. For a long time, I thought I found myself because of it, but now I realize I found myself in spite of it. We wanted different things out of life, and he never really understood or shared my love of nature and hiking. He even teased me for asking about the massive trees around Juneau.

For the record, they’re Western hemlocks. I figured it out myself.

Sometimes life grants you gifts in unexpected packaging. Like the Rolling Stones said: you can’t always get what you want… but you get what you need. That first trip gave me much more than a relationship. It gave me lifelong passions, countless adventures/misadventures, confidence, curiosity, and a deep love for the natural world. It changed how I see both #nature and myself.

Growing up on the East Coast, #nature seemed small and controlled, squeezed into whatever space was left between buildings or sidewalk cracks. Alaska showed me the opposite: there, society fits around the nature. Juneau seemed to exist only because the mountains allowed it. Forests reached right up to neighborhoods. And glaciers, salmon, ravens, and bears felt like neighbors, not just attractions. There was a real respect for the land, wildlife, and Indigenous cultures. It made me see how differently we treat nature back home, and how much Colonialism attitudes still shape how we interact with the world around us.

Reflections on the five-year anniversary of my first trip to #Alaska ! A thread

Five years ago today, I hopped off a plane in #Juneau , Alaska, and started to rediscover a part of myself I had long forgotten.

Back in July of 2021, I was a fresh-faced 26-year-old flying nearly 4,000 miles across the continent to visit my long-distance boyfriend for the first time. I had no idea just how much those ten days would change my life.

This is one of my favorite pictures I have ever taken, but since it's the view from my ex's back porch, I will never get quite the same view ever again.
