A small patch of vibrant red poppies growing out of an asphalt surface right beside the sea. The bottom third of the frame is dominated by a rough, textured, sandy-gray asphalt pathway. The focus is sharpest right at the base of the plants, showing individual grains and pebbles in the pavement. Bursting from a crack where the pavement meets a small ridge is a lush patch of green, feathery weeds and grass. Sprinkled throughout this greenery are several bright red poppies. In the upper midground, a calm, hazy body of water stretches horizontally across the frame. The horizon line is soft and slightly blurred, blending subtly into the sky.

The same moth seen from behind in its classic crucifixion pose, wings stretched out orthogonally from the body, and the legs extended, dropping vertically alongside it. The strong spars holding the wings can be seen – in total there are five, two on the forewing, three on the hindwing. The long feathery plumes hanging from the wings are particularly clear in this picture.

The moth has long, very feathery wings, held out on "spars" perpendicular to its long body. There are some flecks of brown on the wings, and more on the otherwise white legs. The eyes are pale blue-grey, and the antennae are also white.
