Negotiations between us, together with rulings by the #US #SupremeCourt, dismantled the initial version of the sweeping #tariff measures. Yet this month, disregarding dozens of meetings between our teams, solid technical arguments & documents I personally handed to #Trump, the US government imposed new #tariffs on #Brazil ranging from 12.5% to 37.5%.

As a result, Global Trade Alert, an independent organization based in Switzerland, estimates that #Brazil & #Turkey are now the second most heavily tariffed countries by the #UnitedStates, behind only #China. This is despite the #US surplus with Brazil in bilateral trade in goods & services, which has totaled $428 billion over 15 consecutive years.

Besides being unfair, the new #tariffs are a strategic mistake: They will harm the #US #economy & the US partnership with #Brazil. Several US industrial sectors depend on Brazilian inputs. Food, footwear, textiles, furniture, auto parts & many other products will become more expensive for US #consumers.

Brazilian exports to the #US have fallen to their lowest level since 1997. Comparing the first 6 months of 2025 & 2026, bilateral #trade with the US declined by 12.8%, while #Brazil’s trade with the #EU grew by 6.1% & its trade with #China increased by 15.9%.
In the medium term, these #tariffs will disrupt #SupplyChains that are currently deeply integrated, & Brazilian companies will replace their US suppliers with partners elsewhere.
This speaks volumes about the inconsistency between the interests the #US proclaims in its #NationalSecurity strategy & the policies it pursues in the #WesternHemisphere.
#LatinAmerica & the #Caribbean need neither aircraft carriers patrolling their waters nor punitive #tariffs. What we lack are reliable & predictable partners. While the US is closing off its #market, other countries have stepped forward as alternatives, with a positive agenda capable of fostering economic & social development.
…Dividing the world into #SpheresOfInfluence & pursuing #neocolonial ventures for strategic resources are anachronistic gestures & steps backward.
Despite the #US’ long history of political & military interventions in #LatinAmerica & the #Caribbean, there have been moments when Washington proved capable of being a partner worthy of our development interests.
