Damme (Belgium)
@antoinnesterk Interesting- Is that church on the coast?
@robchapman Not anymore. But in the 13th century, Damme was one of the major ports of Europe and the outlet to the sea for the major trading city of Bruges.
@antoinnesterk I only ask, because some of the churches on Romney Marsh lost their steeples because they were being used to signal to smugglers, so I was wondering if that church befell the same fate. My current WIP has smugglers in it, so that is why I was thinking about it when I saw your picture. However, that is a really interesting church
@robchapman Interesting, didn't know that. But I looked it up. The transept, nave, and spire were demolished in 1727, due to the lack of funds for a thorough restoration, and the town’s decline—which led to a falling population.
@antoinnesterk Oh that is a shame, even back then there wasn't the money to keep a town thriving. As much as times change, it is amazing how similar issues are the same
