Keir Starmer’s social media ban for under-16s could backfire, experts warn

Typical political fudge that will not work. Tackle the cause not the consequence. Take on big tech.

The ban here in Aus hasn't fully worked. Kids lie about DoB and get around it in various ways. But... for a lot of kids it DOES work.
Look at the wins not the losses. Literally it's damage limitation.

There is **zero** doubt that big tech is either inclined, willing or committed to tackling hate online, abuse, mis/disinformation, algorithms or exploitative processes in SocMed.. These corps just CANNOT be trusted to do the right thing.

So whatever Keir Starmer and other leaders do to protect kids (and frankly all of us) is good, not censorship.

Its online seatbelts and helmets, isn't it ?

@therightarticle Everything Starmer touches backfires, so it’s a certainty that the social media ban will go badly.

"“The price of admission to the internet will now be ID checks,” said Big Brother Watch’s Coulson. “Ending anonymity online is a step that authoritarian regimes can only dream of. We all deserve privacy, but political dissidents, journalists, and victims of coercive control will find the need to out themselves especially terrifying."
