My favourite paintings, No.1
Suzanne Valadon. The Blue Room (1923)
Suzanne Valadon fought to become an artist, having honed her skills as a painter watching the Parisian artists she modelled for. This signature painting is a fabulous critique of the genre of the reclining nude favoured by male artists across the centuries.
The model is dressed causally, smokes & refuses to engage with the viewer. While not strictly s self portrait the sentiment is all Valdon's!

Hi writers and artists! I wanna finally introduce myself, I joined bc BlueSky's leads are too pro AI.
I write spec fiction, fantasy and scifi stuff (on its surface soft scifi but in actuality it varies) and I like queer, woke, disability rep, etc.
My current WIP series, now in 2026, is about a mage who ends up in a wheelchair and happens to intimidate everyone at her college!🧙♀️👩🦽✨ What's not to love?
Curious to hear what y'all are up to!

"Some days no one turns up for a #tour at all. Most days there are only a few, incl those curious about all the reports of ruin. When people do come, what do they see?
In the Opera House, which no longer has an opera, there is an empty orchestra pit scattered w/trash... In the corridors & lounges, artwork has disappeared.
And yet Sandy Weiswasser, a retired 6th grade teacher who for 18 yrs has given hundreds of people free tours ... keeps reporting for duty."

"Everywhere is the heavy, closed-curtain silence of an institution that has lost some 90% of its employees and 100% of its paying audience.
Ms. Weiswasser keeps coming to give tours, she said, to bear witness, to tell her dwindling visitors that the shabby emptiness they see is not what the #KennedyCenter was. For more than half a century it was a grand democratic project, she tells them, bringing the #beauty and #inspiration of the #arts to everyone."

"Last year, Trump removed the Kennedy Center’s leadership, cut its programming and installed a handpicked board that had his name drilled into the building front. A court ordered the name removed last month. Audiences, performers and visitors have fled from the center, which has lost about 90 percent of its staff and, for now, 100 percent of its paying audience."

Trump Gutted the Kennedy Center. A Tour Guide Wants You to See It Anyway.
In a dogged demonstration of love for a Washington institution, Sandy Weiswasser is among a few dozen volunteers still showing dwindling visitors a hollowed-out building.

"The ending of the tours comes after a volunteer tour guide was featured in a New York Times article detailing Trump’s gutting of the iconic cultural institution. Before the memo was circulated on Thursday, three volunteers had expressed worries to a reporter that the #KennedyCenter would target the tour program in retribution."

This week I've been mainly reading, no. 318.
Alice Goldfarb Marquis' Marcel Duchamp: The Bachelor Stripped Bare (2002) will be of great help to anyone trying to make sense of Duchamp's contentious influence on contemporary art. Mixing analysis & biography Marquis does an excellent job of both situating the artist & exploring the driving interests behind his life & work. Largely sympathetic it is however not uncritical & thus is a great place to start figuring out Duchamp.
Art May Hold the Key to Reclaiming Focus in a Hyper-Accelerated World,
In an age of overstimulation, artist Gail Wegodsky argues that lingering in front of a painting can be a radical act of presence.
In the modern world, driven by social media and short attention spans, living never seems to slow down let alone stop.

Artist Charles Ross spent 50 years building Star Axis, a monumental observatory on a New Mexico mesa. Those who walk up the staircase of this earthen pyramid can view the sky as it was 13,000 years ago—and as it will be 13,000 years from now. Dive into the passion and process of “the last great land artist you’ve never heard of” (New York Times)
