a friend asked me, why i was so against AI? isn't it great they have vacuumed all the knowledge out there and are using it for AI?

AI’s fundamental problem is that techbros are deciding what is knowledge.

#techbros aren’t librarians or teachers. they aren’t doctors or scientists. they aren't historians or archivists. techbros don’t sew, carve wood, turn clay or paint.

techbros don’t even code the software they peddle… 🧵

AI is the marketing of techbros’ Aleph. they really want us to believe they hold all the knowledges, all the expertise, all the knowing in their water-guzzling, ecosystem burning data centers.

knowledge depends on the people sharing it. knowledge is a moment of a persons life’s work. we call it expertise to highlight a person’s long history doing something or the high level of their technical craft.

in other words, there is no knowledge without people doing the knowing, and in some instances, spending their lives in the PURSUIT of that knowing.

Da Vinci would have died an accountant had he not been paid to PURSUE his interests and then find from them what he did best.

so AI is a grift exactly because the Aleph that it is selling is an illusion.

it doesn’t mean that LLMs, as statistical models, are inherently bad. what it does mean is that the #AI that actually do work are:

1. heavily curated
2. developed by experts
3. for very specific tasks

the AI identifying cancer tumors don't know all the histories of oncology and all the cancers. they were trained with narrow & specific parameters for one type of cancer.

we don't need ecocidal data centers to run an #LLM.

you need ecocidal data centers if you are, like #Qatar #SaudiArabia, using #AI to continue peddling the petroleum and methane (natural gas) of your geopolitical power.

someone posted that this techbros dystopia is a symptom of two generations being told “liberal arts” are worthless.

i agree.

the irony being what techbros so desperately mimic with their stochastic parrots is the unique, creative knowledge of us liberal arts losers.
