@ChrisMayLA6 As I understand it, that third is paid by the highest earners, not the wealthiest, and the difference between those two concepts is what a lot of the current campaigning is focusing on.

@ChrisMayLA6 I'm not sure that the majority of tax being paid by the top 1% is a reason to reduce top tax rates and increase middle-rate taxes. I'd argue that, in fact, it's a reason to increase top tax rates.

It's the top 1% who are hoarding the vast majority of money that should be in circulation in a healthy economy. Taxing this hoarding of wealth is essential.

Rather than trying to spread the "tax burden" more evenly across the population, we should be taxing the richest much, much, more on the excess wealth they have. Like 95% tax on wealth over £1,000,000 - way more than anyone needs for a very comfortable life.

The distribution of the "tax burden" will spread out once the excess wealth of the ultra-rich is reduced by suitably high excess-wealth taxes.
