Schools should teach, now some want academic teaching, some want stem, some want humanities, some want practical and some want technical.
It is employers job to train you for work, school is to train you for life.
Notice how the elite schools will continue to educate in the broadest sense and not churn out drones ready to use Microsoft PowerPoint or Chatgpt.
This instruction to provide and education that business wants is only for the poors and less privileged.
And that tells us a lot.

@ChrisMayLA6 It's so weird that the businesses are considered the end of the chain. Because they only exist to provide products or services for customers, right? And those customers are also workers, in this capitalist fantasy—that's how they got the money to buy stuff.
As a customer, what if the product or service I want is "my stolen youth back, plus the knowledge I would've gained if I hadn't been busy learning to drive a forklift"? Does that matter?

The first paragraph is a nod towards the insights of Keynes, the second is a much more difficult issue - when capitalism has robbed you of your preferred youth, why comeback do you have, other (I suppose) to seek to opt out of the system?
@ChrisMayLA6 So, "Just get apprenticed to the local Blacksmith!" is basically what he's suggesting? we're "Back To Victorian Values" again.
@ChrisMayLA6 It’s hard to imagine a worse kind of education. It creates depression, classism, isolation, and suggest people should very much stay in their lane, in their area - especially if it’s a depressed or high unemployment one. There’s nothing to inspire anyone in this. It also panders to the wealthy implying they are the only ones who should go to Oxbridge and such.
If this was a minister’s bright idea, they should lose their job. It’s wrong, stupid, dangerous, shortsighted.

@HarriettMB - It is back to the "sausage machine" model of education, producing a "product" to fit the needs of business but not in any sense exploring or developing the potential of young people. How depressing. @ChrisMayLA6

@ChrisMayLA6 So in areas that have a lot of lower paid jobs the schools should focus on those areas? What an odd choice. We should be giving kids a good education so they can become better than the generations before. Give them something to strive for. Not rolling out corporate drones for whatever the local ‘job market’ demands.

@peterbrown @ChrisMayLA6 I was really struck by a documentary I listened to a few years ago about Finland’s (extremely successful) education system
Students & teachers co-design the curriculum, not around discreet subject areas but around areas the students want to explore & understand or problems they’re interested in solving and the teachers pull in the different disciplines & specialisms to enable it

@Simon318ppm @peterbrown @ChrisMayLA6 I believe that was the idea behind Scotland’s curriculum for excellence. However, I think it only really worked at a primary school level, as certain skills need taught for passing exams etc.
