Formally part of the White House complex, Lafayette Square has been a popular public hangout for generations. In a congested part of town, it's the only green space for blocks. Closing it is unnecessary, except in dire circumstances.

After its post-9/11 rebuild, Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House can be turned into a fortress in a heartbeat. The White House grounds themselves are a fortress. This is more performance theater for an increasingly deranged man.

…The idea of a permanent fence around the park was discussed during the first #Trump admin, including when #protesters thronged the park in the days after the murder of #GeorgeFloyd in May 2020, according to two of the people. After protesters breached temporary fences around the White House complex, Trump was briefly taken to the White House’s underground bunker for security.
