📽️An abandoned drive-in movie theatre, closed for 20 years. One of many lying forgotten across the USA. Have you ever seen a drive-in movie? How long ago?

An abandoned drive-in movie screen stands in an overgrown, cracked asphalt lot under a blue sky. A tree partially obscures the white screen.

@ObsidianUrbex I've been to two in my life, both around twenty-five years ago.

One was Hercules and Jungle 2 Jungle. The other was Must Love Dogs and 40 Year Old Virgin.

@ObsidianUrbex Went to a drive-in with my wife (then new girlfriend) in 1998 in Maryland. I think the movie was Armageddon, but I don't remember watching any of it :)

@briankrebs@infosec.exchange @ObsidianUrbex@mstdn.social it was probably at Bengies. They're still open! https://www.bengies.com/ (and check the snack prices. Frozen in the past, like hyperinflation never happened.)

@ObsidianUrbex In the US, I grew up just outside of NYC, where there's not even a chance of a drive-in theater, but then i moved to the midwest and discovered that there are a fair number of them around here. They do movies in the park on bedsheets too. With streaming services having severely limited our choices, I think it'd be neat to guerilla-rig a home projector and show great forgotten movies for free, like Man of Aran or something.

@ObsidianUrbex The last time I went to a drive-in must have been the early 1990s. I think it was the only time I went to one driving there myself, as they pretty much disappeared not much longer past then with the rise of dolby/thx/etc in sit-down theatres.

@ObsidianUrbex

When I was kid there were at least 5 operating in my home town. Was great fun! None are operating today.

I did however manage to get hold of a some of the old speakers which I restored and converted to bluetooth. Did several of these in various retro colours for friends and relatives.

We talked about going to one last night. There is still a drive-in about thirty miles from here. The thought passed before we checked what was showing. It was a gorgeous sunset so we watched that instead.

@ObsidianUrbex I was on vacation in Maine a few years back, and they had an old-fashioned drive-in. We loved it. Saw "Spider-Man: Homecoming", if memory serves.

@ObsidianUrbex We used to go all the time when I was a kid but I've probably not been in like 15-20 years? I do, however, believe the one we went to is still open!
