A Baroque door wearing a Gothic arch.
The pointed brick arch in Lüneburg dates to the city's medieval salt-trade era. The Rococo-inflected door surround (pilasters, cartouche panel) came later, probably the 18th century. The two stone relief roundels flanking the garden gate are likely late Baroque garden ornaments. The pale sky blue color is a northern German tradition: in Low German brick Gothic regions, blue-painted woodwork against warm red brick has centuries of precedent.
Three architectural eras in one frame, and the whole thing still functions as someone's front gate.

This week's Hamburg doors include a circular brick portal crowned with a Jugendstil frieze of water lilies, pale blue-green against red brick. It's the same aquatic motif that obsessed Art Nouveau ornament designers, the same era Monet was painting his Nymphéas series at Giverny. Worth a second look at the pale blue stairs leading up to it too.
