Because that is what the stock market is now. Nobody buys shares in companies they want to own part of anymore. They just gamble on the share prices. They don't care about companies long term, just if share prices will rise enough short term so they can cash their bet in and take their winnings.

@thomasfuchs I don't know, my gambling addicted grandparents used to think they could predict when a video poker machine was going to hit. Sure they died poor as dirt, but they were right at least 1% of the time.
