Symbole incontestable de la renaissance du Havre, l’église Saint-Joseph est un édifice hors du commun. Ses dimensions impressionnantes et son allure d’outre-Atlantique troublent les repères religieux qui en font pourtant l’une des réalisations les plus remarquables du XXème siècle en France. Véritable œuvre votive à la mémoire des victimes de l’anéantissement du Havre, Saint-Joseph célèbre du haut de ses 107 m, la renaissance d’une ville qui s’impose comme la porte d’entrée maritime de la France, dotant ainsi l’édifice religieux d’une autre vocation, plus profane. À se rapprocher de cet amer d’espérance, comme irrésistiblement attiré par son élan vertical, l’on saisit peu à peu la dimension architecturale incroyable qui valut au nouvel emblème du Havre reconstruit d’être classé monument historique moins de dix ans après son achèvement. Portée ici à son apogée, l’expression magnifique qu’Auguste Perret a su donner au béton, décline toute les nuances d’une palette jusqu’alors insoupçonnée pour cette pierre reconstituée. Cependant, le saisissement n’est total qu’une fois franchi le seuil de Saint-Joseph, lorsqu’éclate la complicité entre le poète du béton et le maître verrier Marguerite Huré : entièrement ajourée sur ses huit côtés, la tour lanterne sublime les principes liturgiques grâce aux 12 768 vitraux multicolores soufflés à la bouche qui, dans une mystique religieuse savamment réinventée, touchent l’âme du visiteur émerveillé.
