I’ve come to regret my laissez-faire approach to my raspberry patch. It’s become more of a raspberry thicket. This winter I’ll definitely get it under control (I said that last year too…)

I have known people who managed their raspberries by cutting half the shrubs to the ground every other winter (I assume winter?). Basically half the production, but no finicky pruning. They might even have brush-hogged them, which suggests how much space they had.... @Kimberley
@clew That’s a good idea. Far simpler than trying to remember which are summer fruiting and which are autumn fruiting and the different ways they need pruning. I like simple
Iirc it works much better with one kind than the other… maybe one of them you cut every other year and the other every third year?
@Kimberley mine is the same but I rarely get a raspberry before the blackbirds!
@helenclayton They’ve reached such a state of abundance that despite the birds taking plenty I’ve still got enough for jamming! I don’t mind that part but they’ve swallowed a path and are threatening to take over the strawberries which have expansionist plans of their own!
@Kimberley I would love to have enough for jamming 😋
At least currants are in no short supply.
@Kimberley @helenclayton This little thread about raspberry and strawberry plants taking over brings me feelings of joy. It is a wonderful contrast to world news headlines. Thank you.
@Kimberley Is a thicket a bad thing?
I bet it supports more wildlife that way.
Are you still getting raspberries from it?
@Kimberley I started my patch from 4 volunteers i dug up that grew out onto the sidewalk on my dog walking route 18 months ago...
I'm already shocked at the size of it 😅
@Kimberley
Never give up 🤔
