The #Navy has 5 destroyers that deploy from a #US port in Rota, Spain, with a 6th expected to arrive there later this year, #Pentagon officials have said. But maintenance issues have piled up due to the #Iran #war’s tempo, complicating matters for Grynkewich, officials said. WaPo withheld specific details about the ships’ availability at the request of #military officials, who cited security concerns.

#US naval destroyers in the eastern Mediterranean Sea have been employed as a part of Israel’s defense for many years. The vessels, equipped with powerful radar & armed with an array of missiles, have downed missiles aimed at #Israel not only by #Iran, but by #Houthi militants in #Yemen that are equipped by Tehran.

The #US & #Israel launched the #war in #Iran on Feb 28, & 14 troops were killed in the initial waves of fighting. Washington & Tehran agreed to a ceasefire in April & then signed an interim deal to end the war in mid-June.

It was short-lived.… #Trump soon declared that the ceasefire was over.

The #Pentagon system’s new “Overseas Operations” category says it tallies casualties starting July 7.

…Since the renewed hostilities began, the #Pentagon has provided even less information about #military strategy & casualties than it did during the first phase of the conflict. The Pentagon has not held a press briefing about the #war since early May, & officials at #US CENTCOM have stopped providing casualty updates to reporters.
