"turned loose outdoors" was normal until 1980s (when many things changed in the anglosphere). We played in the woods, and so did my children, to the consternation of my friends. The grandchildren were, sadly, caged.
My mother, a pre-war child, was known in local police stations because she was often found wandering; at the age of two she wore a silver anklet engraved with her name and address. Though I did fret about my 18-month-old daughter climbing out of a window.

@Strandjunker worst part is I want to give my childhood to my kids and the only way is to go to a small village far from a city, with not even the amenities we had in my 'hood (several convenience stores, bakery, pharmacy, cobbler, butcher, several green grocers, bike repair person... there must have been more, but I remember my chores going there).

If my kids want to bike around, I have to take them to some park through traffic. My block had 3 cars and even further back were almost none.

@Strandjunker honestly, I think the reason so many of us in recent years parented more attentively is that we know that if we behaved like our parents did, our kids would also end up raped, murdered, dead by misadventure, or fucked up by a wide variety of intoxicants, like so many kids we grew up with

at least that was one of MY motivations
